What is charlottesville shooting?

On August 11-12, 2017, a white supremacist gathering took place in Charlottesville, Virginia known as the "Unite the Right" rally. The rally was organized to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Counter-protesters, including antifa and Black Lives Matter activists, also gathered to oppose the white supremacist groups.

On August 12, a man named James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, injuring 19 people and killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer. The incident was widely condemned as an act of domestic terrorism and sparked national outrage.

Fields was charged with federal hate crimes and sentenced to life in prison in 2019. The Charlottesville shooting served as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of white supremacist violence in the United States.
